Etching Developer Classes

Etching Developer Class consists of 5 separate evenings - bookable individually
Artist and etcher-extraordinaire Robert Powell will teach a series of in-depth classes to aid you in developing your skills in each 3-hour class. Through examples, demonstration, and hands on learning you can work on trouble shooting issues you have been coming up against and learning new etching processes.
Feel free to bring plates/prints you have been working on, there will be opportunities to discuss, and trouble shoot your work in progress.
Choose the class you want and book on that date. You can add one or multiple classes to your basket.
Classes are £55 (£50 concession) each.
This class is for people with recent Etching experience. Please do not book if you are not familiar with basics of Etching at Edinburgh Printmakers.
Topics:
Monday 1st June | Inking/A la poupée/Relief rolls
This class will look in depth at inking-up techniques for etching. Beginning with simple scrim and tissue wiping and going through hand wiping, use of hot plate, A la poupée inking and wiping and finishing with relief roll.
Monday 29th June | Advanced Aquatint & Trouble Shooting
We will go through the process of making a copper aquatint strip. Going through plate prep, application of aquatint, percentage coverage, use of stop outs, use for the ferric tank for etching, removal of stop outs and accumulative aquatinting. Feel free to bring plates you are working on for discussion and troubleshooting.
Monday 17th September | Spit bite with Ferric Chloride & Soluble Grounds
We will make small copper spit bite test plates together. Going through application of aquatint, set up of safe mordant working area, use of concentrated ferric chloride, timings and cumulative etching.
Monday 5th October | Crayon lift & Coffee Lift
Use of crayon lift to experiment with positive drawn crayon marks on copper plates. We will each make a crayon drawing on prepared copper plates. Crayon lift is based on the resistance between oil and water and can be seen in full effect in the work of Barbara Rae and John Bellany.
Robert Powell
Robert Powell is an Edinburgh-based visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice focuses on printmaking, but extends to sculpture, video, and text. A graduate of Edinburgh College of Art and longstanding studio member of Edinburgh Printmakers, Robert Powell has exhibited widely at home as well as throughout Europe, North America and Asia.
